Physiotherapy after pacemaker implantation
As a precaution, it is normally recommended that the patient avoid strenuous activities for 3-4 weeks after having their pacemaker implanted. During that period the wound will heal, and the pacemaker leads begin to attach to the heart muscle.
Raising the upper arm on the side of the pacemaker above the shoulder height and lifting heavy loads should be avoided during that time.
It is important to find the courage and motivation for exercise while in the hospital; the pacemaker enables this to be done safely.
The doctor, physiotherapist and other staff will give the patient advice on their heart and instructions for exercise. The patient’s need for physiotherapy is determined by their possible underlying heart disease.
In the hospital, a physiotherapist evaluates the patient’s performance and heart rhythm under stress, advises them on appropriate exercise and instructs them on what to do after discharge.
