Research activities

Tays Heart Hospital focuses on scientific research and development work. The research projects of Heart Hospital may vary from the development of therapeutic techniques to examining the patient’s post-treatment quality of life. Heart Hospital has done valuable research into angioplasty techniques and better protection of the heart during surgery.

Pirkanmaa Hospital District uses Heart Hospital for its research into cardiothoracic surgery, as well as in the fields of anaesthesiology, internal medicine and surgery.

Research activities are coordinated and guided by the research steering group. Professors of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery are responsible for scientific research with the help of a research coordinator and research nurses. Research activities are carried out in cooperation with esteemed research communities.

Teaching activities

Pirkanmaa Hospital District uses Heart Hospital as a specialisation centre for cardiologists and cardiothoracic doctors, as well as doctors of anaesthesiology, internal medicine and surgery.

Heart Hospital trains the medical students of the University of Tampere at the relevant point of their studies. The students can observe patient care in Heart Hospital. They can assist in the polyclinic, the treatment room and the operating room, as well as participate in the patient care and investigations carried out in intensive care, high dependency ward and regular wards.

Medical students can also get counselling and advice from doctors in Heart Hospital for their thesis work in the fields of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery and, when relevant for their specialisation, on the topics of anaesthesiology, internal medicine and surgery.

In training nursing staff, Heart Hospital cooperates with Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences by arranging specialist training and by acting as a teaching hospital. Heart Hospital also serves as a teaching hospital for other student groups within the hospital environment.
